Questions were raised by family members of Mark Marquise Davis and community activist Shareef Aleem after Denver police entered the Davis home Thursday without a search warrant.
“It’s horrible,” said Alicia Davis, Mark Davis’ aunt. “This is so illegal.”
Davis family members said that they were surprised by the early-afternoon raid and that police had guns drawn, screaming and yelling and forcing family members – including a newborn and small children – to wait outside in the cold for hours.
“I thought they were going to come in shooting,” said DeDe Davis, mother of Mark Davis.
Detective John White, a police spokesman, said police followed proper procedure, entering the house to clear and secure it while awaiting a search warrant, which was obtained later in the day. No search was conducted during the intial entry, he said.
But Aleem, standing alongside family members, was visibly upset.
“Mayor, your broken-windows policy is about broken glass,” Aleem said, referring to a new Denver police policy. “If we catch the police out of order we’re going to break their (expletive), according to the U.S. Constitution.”
