Argentine striker Nicolas Hernandez will make his Rapids debut Sunday in the club’s season opener against the Houston Dynamo after signing a contract Thursday.
Hernandez has been with the club during the preseason but had not signed a contract. He began his career in the Argentine first and second divisions before signing with Italian club Cremonese in 2002. He then returned to Argentina before playing for Cobreloa of Chile in 2005.
CSU 1-2 in heptathlon at home track meet
Colorado State sophomore Emily Pearson posted the top times in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200 meters and leads the heptathlon after the first day at CSU’s Glenn Morris Multis track meet. Pearson has 3,036 points, followed by teammate Katie Lloyd, who tied Pearson at 14.54 seconds in the hurdles and has 2,995 points. Rich Mattison of Northern Colorado leads the men’s decathlon with 3,285 points.
Chill beats Spiders, plays for title
Ruth Riley scored 28 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Colorado Chill to a 97-74 win over the visiting San Jose Spiders in the semifinals of the National Women’s Basketball League playoffs. The Chill will play the San Diego Siege, which beat San Francisco 75-63, at 7:30 tonight at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland for the title.
