Eight Republican state lawmakers wrote a letter to George W. Bush under the letterhead of the Colorado General Assembly today, to “strongly request” that he declare a state of emergency for the entire nation until illegal immigration can be brought under control.
The open letter came on the heels of demonstrations around the country Monday that saw hundreds of thousands rally in support of immigrants and in opposition to the kinds of enforcement-focused reforms preferred by some of the letter’s signers.
“We have been shocked by the blatant, coordinated, and anti-American demonstrations on behalf of illegal aliens throughout the country…with little or no serious action on the part of the Federal Government to address the growing negative impact of illegal aliens, on the American people, or to protect all states from invasion,” the letter read.
The letter was released publicly by the Republican Study Committee of Colorado, though it only was signed by six of the 18 members listed on the caucus group’s website.
The letter argues that “it is unconscionable that Americans would support the growth of a new underclass reminiscent of the slavery of the Nineteenth Century.”
