The inexorable spring melting process gave anglers an early opportunity to fish Spinney Mountain Reservoir. The impoundment near Hartsel opened to fishing at daybreak this morning, a signal event in Colorado’s open-water season.
Colorado State Parks officials opened the north boat ramp to all craft; the south ramp remains temporarily closed from a steep drop-off at the end.
Meanwhile, North Park lakes show signs of cracking. Bill Willcox, who operates Lake John Resort, reports the first opening of the edges in the north bays.
East Delaney Butte Lake has sprouted open water. South Delaney also shows a thin ribbon of water in the southwest corner.
“Once these lakes develop some cracks, the wind will break them right open,” Willcox predicted.
