Getting your player ready...

Stepping into Slogar in Crested Butte makes you want to check your holster in case Black Bart and his ornery gang are tying one on. After all, it was a saloon and brothel in the 1880s, one of 18 in Crested Butte back then. With the vintage bar, stylish Victorian lounge, pull-cord johns and creaky floors, it feels like the real McCoy. Tastes like Caroline Ingalls runs the kitchen, too. Slogar has the best fried chicken in Colorado. The skillet-fried recipe dates to 1915 and is staggeringly delicious. For $15 you get half a bird and all-you-can-eat fixings such as creamy corn, sweet and faintly sour Dutch-styled coleslaw, mashed potatoes and dangerously delicious biscuits. The three-course meal starts with a strange pickle plate and a tomato chutney that deserves a pedestal. It ends with, of course, homemade ice cream. It would be a mistake to miss Slogar’s one-of-a-kind pollo.
