Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye is officially classified as an American IPA but with a noticeable rye presence battling it out with an equally large infusion of hops. The addition of rye gives the beer a spicy/fruity quality, but it is the hops that come forward. It is also “big,” 8 percent alcohol (by volume).
Founded in 1995, Bear Republic sits in the heart of wine country in Healdsburg, Calif. The brewery’s output, which includes Racer 5, Red Rocket Ale and Special XP Pale Ale, has won bagfuls of medals at the California State Fair.
Hop Rod Rye comes only in 22-ounce bottles ($4.49). It’s available throughout Colorado and in 10 other states.
