A state inspection of the Weld County Humane Society found no serious infractions of state guidelines in the euthanization and medical care of the animals in the society’s shelter in Evans.
Critics of the shelter’s director – Elaine Hicks – said she was euthanizing too many dogs and cats too quickly. They also alleged the shelter was mistreating animals including starving them to death.
As many as 15 former volunteers and employees at the shelter presented a letter to the humane society’s board of directors Tuesday night, demanding Hicks’s ouster. She took over as executive director of the shelter in January.
But an on-site inspection of the facility by the Colorado Department of Agriculture found only one non-critical violation. The agency examined techniques used when an animal is euthanized, holding times for stray animals, timely veterinary care and medication administration and documentation.
“There may be issues that need to be looked into, but they will need to be done on a local level,” said Keith Roehr, acting state veterinarian. “The guidelines we follow have not been violated.”
