DOUGLAS COUNTY
Liberty Media nears deal to buy Braves
Douglas County-based Liberty Media and its chairman John Malone are reportedly close to acquiring Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves as part of an asset swap with media giant Time Warner.
An announcement is expected this week, according to a report published Friday in the New York Post, which cited an unnamed source.
Liberty, which holds a 4 percent stake in Time Warner valued at roughly $3 billion, is trying to unload the stock in a way that would minimize the tax impact. Under the deal, Liberty would receive cash and the Braves in exchange for Time Warner shares and a 50 percent stake in the Court TV cable network, according to the report.
Liberty Media spokesman John Orr declined to comment Friday.
