Defense giant Northrop Grumman is expanding its presence in Colorado Springs.
The Los Angeles-based company will unveil details today at a news conference at The Broadmoor hotel.
The company employs 2,700 in Colorado, including more than 1,200 in Colorado Springs.
Northrop “expects to grow its local presence,” according to a company statement. Chief executive Ronald Sugar will “share new details on the company’s future plans for its Colorado Springs operation.”
Northrop’s Colorado employees work in the company’s Mission Systems and Information Technology business units.
Last September, Northrop won a 10-year research-and-development contract from the Department of Defense that could be worth up to $2.5 billion if all options are exercised.
The company has said the bulk of the work would be done in Colorado Springs but hasn’t specified how many new jobs the contract might generate.
Colorado Springs economist David Bamberger estimated Tuesday that 2,000 jobs could be created over the life of the Joint National Integration Center Research and Development contract.
“It’s something that’s going to probably play out over several years. It’s not going to happen all at once,” Bamberger said.
During the first quarter of this year, Northrop received $92 million for the contract, according to a regulatory filing.
