Golden – Veni, vidi, vici: I came, I saw, I conquered.
Julius Caesar said it more than 2,000 years ago, and Monarch sophomore Brooke Collins lived it Monday.
Collins had not played at Rolling Hills Country Club, but that didn’t seem to matter as she shot a 2-over-par 75, four strokes ahead of the competition in the 12th year of Jefferson County’s Ashley Forey Memorial tournament.
“That was my first time on this course, so I didn’t know what to expect,” Collins said. “The greens were in good condition, but they were playing really fast. You really have to read the greens if you want to sink a putt.”
Behind seniors Caroline Miller (95) and Chelsea Collins (87), Brooke’s older sister, and freshman Katie MacIntyre (94), the Coyotes became the sixth program to etch its name on the team trophy.
The weather could not have been better for the tournament, which featured 34 teams of four golfers.
“Ashley must have had a hand in this one,” said Karen Forey, the mother of the event’s namesake.
Green Mountain finished five strokes behind Monarch in second place, and the Rams foursome of Sarika Fields, Christina Duran, Rachel Weeks and Mary Lenefsky claimed the tournament’s other team honor, the Jefferson County League title. Green Mountain will pursue its eighth consecutive regional title next week.
And while Brooke Collins may have been dissecting the course for the first time, Fields was cruising to her third-place score of 79 with an insider’s knowledge.
Fields, who finished behind Heritage’s Kayley Kempton on a scorecard tiebreaker, has caddied at Rolling Hills the past four years.
“I really know the course, so that helps me relax,” Fields said. “These greens are tricky. They look like they break into the mountains, but they break down and away.”
