I grew up in Idaho Springs and, believe it or not, there was a Miss Poteet contest (Miss Poteet was a character in the Steve Canyon comic strip.) I won, probably around 1958 or 1960. Steve is still a commanding-looking figure.

When I was a boy in the ’50s, my dad told me this was a famous pilot killed in a plane crash somewhere near here. It was only later that I learned he was a comic-book character created as a tribute to WWII aviators. In 1947, Squirrel Gulch, near Idaho Springs, was renamed to honor the namesake of the statue, which was erected in town in 1950. I always (drive past the statue) when I have visitors who remember the comic strips of Milton Caniff.
