Like the swallows to Capistrano, American white pelicans splash down each spring in Windsor. This rapidly growing town can’t help but honor the giant birds, fancy in their mating-season plumage, when they stop for a month to preen and refuel en route to nesting grounds north of the border. The 2006 Pelican Festival runs May 26-28 and includes a stellar lineup of competitions (ranging from a golf tournament, to a triathlon, to a human-powered pelican watercraft race), exhibitions (water-skiing, hot air balloons and wakeboards) and entertainment (bands, food and craft vendors and a petting zoo). Visit pelicanfest.com for details, and if you decide to go, don’t miss Windsor’s excellent selection of local restaurants and retailers.
