NEW YORK-

Sure, you can get a hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs and home fries at just about any American diner. But what should you eat and where should you go when you're looking for a morning meal in Europe?

The May issue of Travel + Leisure recommends the following breakfasts in five European cities:

–In Barcelona, head for the Boqueria market on La Rambla for the classic cafe con leche and a tomato-rubbed toast called pa amb tomaquet. Tortillas here refer to a vegetable-filled omelet. Or sit down at a dining bar–such as El Quim de la Boqueria or Pinotxo–for something more formal.

–In Berlin, breakfasts can be international, like the Pariser–croissant, madeleine, baguette; the Wiener–poached eggs, rolls, apricot jam; the Triestiner–prosciutto, cheese; or even the New Yorker–smoked salmon, bagels, cream cheese. Local favorites include apple strudel in cafes and coffee bars. Try Cafe Einstein, 58 Kurfurstenstrasse.

–In London, try a power breakfast at the Wolseley, 160 Piccadilly, with a crepe filled with fried egg, bacon and Gruyere cheese. As an alternative, eggs Arlington Royale is something like eggs Benedict only with smoked salmon and caviar.

–In Paris, you can have breakfast and then go shopping at the Delicabar cafe inside Le Bon Marche's department store. Try hot chocolate with gingerbread spice and a sweet treat like glazed-carrot mousse bombe.

–In Vienna, Meinl's Restaurant has everything from chocolate croissants to Weisswurst (white sausage) to blini, all to be washed down by melange, an Austrian version of cappuccino. The cafe is located above a renowned gourmet food shop, Meinl am Graben.
