Fishing for families

The Colorado Division of Wildlife will stage its annual “Take a Family Fishing” program June 10 at Denver Water’s Kassler Education Center at Waterton and Lehow Lake in Littleton. The event is part of National Fishing and Boating Week.

Approximately 300 children and their parents are expected to join in this instructional activity on fishing basics and sporting ethics. An entry form is available by phoning 303-291-7502 or by going to the DOW website at http://wildlife.state.co.us/Fishing/ and clicking on “clinics and education.” Forms must be submitted by May 19.

For the birds

Selected sections of shoreline at several southeast Colorado reservoirs will be closed for the next few weeks to protect the nesting sites of piping plovers and least terns. These include John Martin, Adobe Creek, Nee Gronda, Nee Noshe and Queens. Signs mark closed areas.

Vega boating

Vega State Park has opened its Early Settlers boat ramp. Two other ramps will open when the reservoir fills.

Arkansas cleanup

The annual Arkansas River community cleanup to remove trash from the corridor from Leadville to Cañon City will be Saturday. Participants should contact the Arkansas River Headwaters Recreation Association at 719-539-7289.
