For reasons involving safety, noise and dust, the use of off-highway vehicles will not be permitted at DeWeese State Wildlife area beginning July 1. Officials also cited destruction of wildlife habitat by inconsiderate drivers as a factor in the decision. The SWA is located 8 miles north of Westcliffe.
Joseph’s Journey event
A free fishing derby for youths under 21 with serious illnesses will be held June 3 under the direction of Joseph’s Journey, an organization that brings outdoor experiences to kids with life-threatening diseases. The event will be at a private lake near Waterton Canyon, with food and equipment provided. Siblings also may participate in an event that will include two sessions, at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. To participate, call 303-989-5710.
Trout for kids
Denver Trout Unlimited has launched a program to teach middle school students about fly-fishing. Kepner Middle School was selected for the pilot program, K-Kids Fly Fishers. Students were instructed in various aspects of fishing, along with the importance of conservation and water issues.
Duck dedication
A unit in the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge in the San Luis Valley has been dedicated in the name of the Harley family of Albuquerque, Ducks Unlimited has announced. The father and son, Wayne and Joe Harley, donated more than $100,000 for use in the valley priority area, one of the most productive breeding habitats for waterfowl on the continent.
