An FBI agent based in Colorado Springs was indicted today by a federal grand jury, accused of falsifying $6,832 in travel expenses.

Douglas V. Brennan, 40, was staying in a Denver hotel for nine weeks in 2003 as he testified in a federal trial, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice. The DOJ paid for his lodging.

But according to the indictment, Brennan also submitted bills and was reimbursed by the FBI for hotel costs.

Brennan was indicted on three counts of false claim to the United States.

“He billed the FBI for lodging expenses knowing full well that they had not been incurred by him,” said Melodie Rydalch, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Utah.

The case is being handled by federal prosecutors in Utah to avoid a conflict of interest for federal prosecutors in Denver. Brennan is scheduled to appear in federal court June 2.
