A limousine driver who ran over a 17-year-old East High School student on prom night Saturday has been arrested for a probation violation in an earlier juvenile sex case.

Stanley D. Sample, 38, of Lakewood, was booked into the Arapahoe County Detention Facility at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday, according to a jail official.

His bond was set at $50,000.

Molly Bloom remained in critical condition Wednesday at Denver Health Medical Center. Doctors have amputated her left leg.

Meanwhile, Sample is not under investigation for driving drunk during the accident, Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman said Wednesday.

Sample has a 2001 drunken-driving conviction and a separate DUI arrest in 1997 that was dismissed.

But Whitman said police did not consider him impaired the night of the accident.

“We have no reason to believe that,” Whitman said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, with many more witnesses left to interview, the chief said.

A report on the accident won’t be released to the public until the investigation is complete.

Sample did not return a message left at his home.

In addition to the DUI conviction, Sample is a registered sex offender in Lakewood.

Sample pleaded guilty in 2001 to contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a felony, and misdemeanor sexual assault. He was sentenced to four years of probation.

He allegedly violated probation terms by failing to pay a fine and by not following other release conditions, the Arapahoe jail official said Wednesday.

Because the sex crime was a misdemeanor, Sample was not barred from being in contact with minors.

Sample was described as an exemplary employee of 5th Avenue N Style Limousine. His boss, Richard Perricone, has said that Sample is distraught about what happened.

Perricone said Sample passed all the necessary background checks to be licensed and credentialed as a limousine driver.

The accident happened Saturday night in front of the Sherman Events Center at East 17th Avenue and Sherman Street.

Bloom was among a group getting into the passenger side of the Hummer limousine when Sample began driving off.

The girl was dragged under the rear tire for a short distance before the driver realized what was happening and stopped.

Sample is on leave pending the results of the investigation.
