Local music and local brews make for a match made in heaven for Denver’s indie rockers.

Oskar Blues Brewery is releasing “singing 12-packs” of Dale’s Pale Ale and Old Chub, both locally brewed beers that come in casual-cool cans instead of the usual bottles.

Five thousand of the 12-packs – available at Front Range liquor stores including Argonaut, Applejack, and Liquor Mart – include a limited edition 12-song compilation CD with songs by 10 local bands and two national acts chosen by the staff of Boulder-based Marquee Magazine.

Tracks include rockabilly and alt-country songs by 18 Wheeler, The Railbenders, Oak- hurst, and Halden Wofford & the Hi-Beams, plus roots, jazz fusion, acoustic and indie rock by Remedy Hotel, Polytoxic, Zebra Junction, and Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s, and more. A series of free live shows is scheduled to promote the CD release; catch Zebra Junction on Thursday and 18 Wheeler on June 1 at Oskar Blues, 303 Main St. in Lyons, 303-823-6685.

Sushi, sake, sumo

I’m heading down to the Sushi, Sake & Sumo fundraiser tonight at Invesco Field to judge the sumo contest. Granted, I haven’t the foggiest idea of what that entails, but I’ve been corralled into the judging booth to determine who can shake a sumo booty the best.

In addition to watching the wrestling bouts, adventurous guests can don sumo suits and go head to head. The event includes a fine spread of sushi and sake tastings, and live music by Something Underground. Proceeds will help the Generations Cancer Foundation raise money for cancer research.

Tickets are $50 in advance or $65 at the door; 303-399-4691 for details.

Hush eyeing the ladies

Hush is teaming with JFly Presents to host Fly Ladies, a new weekly ladies’ night starting next week. The theme night is a departure for the “atmospherics parlor” located at 1403 Larimer St., which has avoided traditional marketing techniques in favor of a word-of-mouth method of quietly getting beautiful people into the club.

But co-owner Michael Olsen said he saw an opportunity to build Thursday nights into a big weekly destination.

“No club is really blowing up on Thursdays,” he said. “So I saw a real opportunity to lock it down.” Look for deals like free drinks for the gals from 9 p.m. to midnight, no cover charges, and half-price bottles of Absolut for bottle-service reservations.

Establish a beachhead

Ready to hit the beach? The Mile High City isn’t exactly known for its sandy shorelines, but you’ll find the next best thing at Rise nightclub (1909 Blake St., 303-383-1909) on Fridays. The patio opened for the season last week, so break out the sunglasses and roll down between 5 and 9 p.m. for specials on summertime sippers like mojitos and Coronas. Grab a fish taco from the taco stand, listen to DJ Brian Howe’s Top 40 mix, and sprawl across a cabana under the imported palm trees. If Fridays are too hectic to chill beachside, hit it on a Wednesday evening when the patio party continues all night, with happy hour beer specials and $3 mojitos from 5 p.m. until 2 a.m.

The Cat is back

When Kevin Larson decides to sex up a sagging scene, he does it with panache. He kicked off a series of Saturday night parties at Tabu nightclub (1222 Glenarm Place, 303-571-4545 three weeks ago with the idea to bring back the vibe of the former club in the location, Alley Cat.

Yes, the Cat is back, and it has at least a few more lives ahead of it. A recent visit revealed plenty of flesh during a girl-on-girl fire show, and the audience was invited to join in one at a time to heat things up firsthand in a stripclub-meets-Mardi Gras scene. Up next is the “Wet” theme party this Saturday. Ladies get in free from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m., after that it’s $5 for all.
