The bottleneck of sprinters among the fastest of the fast at this weekend’s girls state track meets includes enough athletes to spill into longer events and jumps – and into multiple classes.
So many runners have already proved to be threats for short-track titles – at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood beginning Friday for the Class 5A and 4A meets and Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo for the 3A and 2A meets – that those with proven track records on the biggest stage of the year are unlikely to coast to the finish line.
But the standouts will have plenty of events to try.
Take Mullen’s Caitlyn Able, for example. She owns a top-five time in Class 4A in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes. And if the task to sweep the three sprints weren’t enough, Able must line up next to Niwot’s Griffin Matthew, the runner to beat among all classes this weekend.
Matthew, the defending champion in the 100 and 200, will help Niwot try to defend its 400 relay title. But Matthew, too, may turn the long jump into a marquee event as she tries to top the state record of 21 feet, 3/4-inches set last year at the state meet by George Washington’s Chealsea Taylor.
Throw in Widefield’s Nyeisha Wright, who owns qualifying times among the quickest in the class and is a contender in the triple jump, and the 4A field could be a mad dash to the finish.
“Whoever runs and whoever wins, it will be fast, blazing fast,” Mullen coach Jack Carson said of the 4A field.
But his outlook could well apply to Class 5A, where those vying to be the fastest girl in the state make it an even deeper competition. George Washington’s Talaya Owens and Eaglecrest’s Ashley Cruder are among those with legitimate claims to not only the 5A crown but to state-wide supremacy.
Cruder owns the season’s fastest 100 time, while Owens has the top 200 time. Throw in Mountain Vista’s Tara LaFerrara, Fairview’s Jessica Watkins, George Washington’s KristaBelle Kiper, Wheat Ridge’s Chantel Bernabo and Littleton’s Lindsey Kaye, and almost no outcome would surprise.
The hurdles also could get interesting. Highlands Ranch’s Alex Gove will look to defend her 100 and 300 hurdles titles, but she’ll have to hold off Littleton’s Nikita Eades. Gove and Eades have battled all season, as witnessed by their split result at the Liberty Bell Invitational in April – Eades won the 100 and Gove took the 300.
In the distance events, the object is multiple titles. In 5A, Rocky Mountain’s Danielle Parry and Smoky Hill’s Keara Sammons are 1-2, respectively, in 3,200 and 1,600 qualifying times. And in 3A, Platte Canyon’s Kristen McGlynn will go for a sweep in the mile and 2-mile.
“It will be fun,” Carson said. “That’s the one thing the kids are thinking right now.”
In the pole vault, an event that has had a new state record every year for four consecutive years, Arapahoe’s Michelle Ripple has the best chance to up that mark again this season.
In 3A, predicting the team title is difficult, with The Classical Academy, Denver Christian, Burlington and Eaton, among others, all vying for top honors. While in Class 2A, Limon will look to earn its third straight state team title.
