Nuevo Laredo, Mexico – Three men were stabbed to death inside a Nuevo Laredo prison, police said Thursday, bringing to 113 the number of killings this year in this violence-wracked border city.
Mauro Antonio Ibarra, Ramiro Ramos and Juan Miguel Rivera, who were alleged members of a prison gang, were killed with home made knives just before midday Thursday, said Ives Soberon, police chief of the state of Tamaulipas, which borders Texas.
The state prison in Nuevo Laredo has been plagued by violence despite promises by the state government to make it more secure. In March, three people were choked to death in the penitentiary.
Nuevo Laredo, a city of 330,000 across from Laredo, Texas, has been caught in a turf war between rival drug gangs fighting for billion-dollar smuggling routes into the United States.
Investigators say the fight is also being fought out in the prison.
