Getting your player ready...

It’s Saturday morning. Amazingly, your calendar is clear. Why poke around the house? Historic Colorado towns such as Empire and Georgetown are perfect spots for impromptu getaways. While away hours walking through pioneer cemeteries, studying architecture, riding the Georgetown Loop Railroad, watching Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep from the road, trolling small shops and sampling local cuisine. Ahh. Infinitely better than doing laundry. If you need an excuse to go there, Georgetown, Empire and Silver Plume celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Argentine Central Railroad on Saturday and May 28 with opera at the Hamill House Museum, a murder mystery at the Hotel de Paris Museum, a pro pack burro race, railroad and mine tours and much more. – Judith Lynn Howard

Getting around: Empire and Georgetown are about an hour west of Denver on Interstate 70. Take exit 232 and head about 1.5 miles on U.S. 40 to Empire. Georgetown is just a few miles farther west on I-70, exit 228.
