Adams State has the early lead in the women’s standings at the Division II national championships in Emporia, Kan., after seniors Emily Mortensen and Michelle Icban finished 1-2 in the 10,000-meter run Thursday. Esther Komen of Western State was eighth.

Junior TiaNiecia Mosley had a busy day, finishing fourth in the long jump and competing in the heptathlon, which she leads after four of seven events.

Mosley won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches, a quarter-inch off her personal best. Mosley had 3,202 points after four of five events Thursday.

Brad Winn and Ashley Burger qualified for the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which will be run on Saturday.

Veideman to wear “C” for Pioneers

Senior defenseman Adrian Veideman has been selected as the captain for the 2006-07 University of Denver hockey season, coach George Gwozdecky announced Thursday. Veideman, from Sicamous, British Columbia, won the honor in a team vote. He is the seventh consecutive defenseman to be captain or co-captain. He had six goals and 11 assists last season.

Receiving the nod from their teammates as alternate captains were senior J.D. Corbin and juniors Paul Stastny and Andrew Thomas.

Three DU lacrosse recruits All-American

Three University of Denver men’s lacrosse recruits were named to the boys All-American team on Thursday, including Denver East High defender Dillon Roy. The others are brothers Charley and John Dickenson, midfielders from Highland Park High School in Texas.

Metro State’s Porreco steps down after 14 seasons

Metro State baseball coach Vince Porreco resigned Thursday, saying in a release he was looking forward to “future opportunities.” In 14 seasons with the Roadrunners, the Arvada native compiled a 353-352-3 record.

CU’s Molnar so close at tennis championships

Two weeks after losing in straight sets to the top-ranked tennis player in the country, University of Colorado junior Eric Molnar nearly pulled off an upset of No. 1 seed Benjamin Kohlloeffel of UCLA in the round of 32 at the NCAA tennis championships in Stanford, Calif.

Molnar won the first set 6-2. Kohlloeffel took the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 to win.

Four-time state champion Nicole Leimbach of TCU, formerly of Pine Creek High School, lost to Tatsiana Uvarova of Virginia Commonwealth 6-2, 6-0.
