Newmont exec denies comment about trial

A Newmont Mining executive in Indonesia denies that he said, as reported by a wire service Friday, that the company’s investment in Indonesia hinges on the outcome of a Newmont executive’s criminal trial.

Based in Denver, Newmont is the world’s second-largest gold miner. A report by Dow Jones/ Associated Press quoted Noke Kiroyan, president of Newmont Indonesian subsidiary PT Newmont Pacific Nusantara, as saying that continued investment in Indonesian mining “depends on the outcome” of Richard Ness’ trial on charges of illegally dumping mining waste from a now-defunct mine.

Kiroyan told Newmont spokeswoman Maureen Upton in Denver that he told wire-service reporters that the trial could affect the general investment climate in Indonesia, but he declined to speculate on the effect on Newmont. The lengthy trial began last August and is expected to continue at least until this fall.
