The last hurrah for in-state players in their schoolboy baseball careers, the Rockies’ event for seniors – the Top 50 Game – will be played at Coors Field today.
Seniors chosen by a panel of Rockies personnel, scouts, coaches and media will compete after the Rockies cap a three-game series against the Florida Marlins. The National League game will start at 1:05 p.m., and the high school game will begin afterward.
The prep game, which has grown from 40 to 50 players, is based on incorporating at least one player from each of the four classifications (5A, 4A, 3A and 2A) and representing as many areas of the state as is warranted.
As has been the case for regular-season prep games played at Coors Field, the Top 50 Game will have a two-hour time limit and all players chosen are scheduled to see action.
With the first day of the draft scheduled Tuesday, a handful of Coloradans have been participating in various professional tryouts, last minute look-sees in front of major-league personnel. Included is Columbine pitcher Evan Anundsen, who was recently in Boston and will return today from Milwaukee and hops it to Coors in time for the game.
Lacrosse
Luke Lemon, formerly of Air Academy near Colorado Springs, recently helped Cortland State University of New York to the Division III national lacrosse championship.
Lemon, a freshman defenseman, and the Red Dragons downed Salisbury 13-12 in overtime last Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
