Sky Sox hold off Tacoma rally for PCL win

Miguel Asencio allowed one earned run on six hits in six innings to lead the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Tacoma Rainiers in a Pacific Coast League game Sunday at Security Service Field.

Asencio (4-3) struck out six before yielding to reliever Randy Williams, who did not allow a hit over two innings. Nate Field earned his 10th save of the season after working the ninth, despite allowing a solo home run to Tacoma’s Scott Youngbauer that brought the score to 4-3.

Jeff Salazar went 3-for-4 and scored twice to lead the Sky Sox at the plate as Colorado Springs (22-35) snapped a three-game losing streak. Youngbauer led the Rainiers (28-27), whose three-game winning streak ended.

Griffin-Mazzullo team tops first CPVA event

Boulder’s Curtis Griffin and Denver’s Tony Mazzullo topped a 17-team field and defeated Mike Daniel of Pleasant Grove, Utah, and Cory Carpenter of Cedar Hills, Utah, to win the Colorado Pro Volleyball Association Tour’s first series event of the season at Arapahoe County Community Park.

Aurora’s Tonya Bond and Larkspur’s Val Duringer won the women’s championship, outlasting Broomfield’s Pam Lubben and Englewood’s Kris Bredehoft in a 14-team field.
