Bogota – A mudslide killed three children and injured five other people, including two minors, in a rural area of the northwestern Colombian province of Antioquia, police said.

The victims were inside two dwellings that were swept away Saturday by the mudslide in La Trampa, a settlement near the town of Olaya.

A police spokesman told reporters that the mudslide killed two siblings, a 2-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, as well as the children’s 4-year-old cousin.

Two other children and three adults from the same family were injured by the mudslide, which was caused by the heavy rains that have drenched a large portion of Colombia.

The Andean nation has experienced unusually heavy precipitation since the rainy season started in March.

More than 130 people have been killed, some 240 injured and nearly 200,000 left homeless by the heavy rains, according to Colombian Red Cross figures.
