D’Evelyn relay team tops at Nike Nationals

D’Evelyn High School won the unseeded division of the boys distance medley Saturday with a time of 10 minutes, 26.66 seconds, a full five seconds ahead of the runner-up at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.

The team of Kenny D’Evelyn (senior), Nate Sandberg (senior), Kevin Williams (sophomore) and Derek Gilmore (senior) also earned All-Colorado honors in the 3,200-meter relay with a state-meet time of 7:48.60. They finished 18th in the 3,200 relay at the national meet, considered the premier prep event in the nation.

Two Durango riders place at Vermont NMBS

Durango’s Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski finished second behind Switzerland’s Christopher Sauser, a two-time World Cup champion, in the men’s pro cross country race at the National Mountain Bike Series No. 3 in West Dover, Vt. In the women’s race, Durango’s Shonny Vanlandingham finished second behind Mary McConneloug of Chilmark, Mass., in the 5.1-mile course.

In the cyclocross event, Barry Wicks, of Corvallis, Ore., topped Boulder’s Ariel Lindsley, who finished second, and Glenwood Springs’ Ross Schnell, who was third.
