The 2006 Mercedes Benz R350 is a crossover between the SUV and the station wagon. But it may, unintendedly, appeal to those who’ve “crossed-over.”
The R350 they sent me looked like a hearse, an impression I had the moment I first laid eyes on it and
one that was, apparently, shared by just about everyone who saw it during my
two-week test drive.
It was jet black, long and lean, and just looked like
it was coming or going from a funeral.
It looked very much like the hearse
in the 1970’s movie “Harold and Maude,” the one that Harold custom-constructed from the Jaguar XKE his mother gave him as a birthday present.
The whole time I had it, I drove slowly, and a line of regular vehicles
followed me through the stop lights. Just kidding. I avoided going near
churches or funeral homes for fear that someone would just start directing
me into the, um, service bay.
