HIT THE STREETS

Just in time for Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, we found a cycle to meet the city streets. The Novara Transfer comes fully accessorized with rack, fenders and kickstand. The 7-gear Shimano setup is internal so you won’t have to worry about tearing up your pant leg, and battery-powered lights come in handy when you work late. The Velo saddle makes for a comfortable seat and Kalloy Cozy Comfort handlebars allow for an upright ride. The Transfer, a Bicyling Magazine 2006 Editors’ Choice Awards Winner, is $600 at REI. TRAINING TABLE

You never know who you’re going to meet after a rock concert. In Chris Carmichael’s case, it was a performance by Sheryl Crow in Aspen that led him to meet restaurateur and chef Mark Tarbell. (His eateries in Lakewood’s Belmar include Oven and, this winter, Home.) Carmichael, founder of Carmichael Training Systems, is coach to such athletes as Lance Armstrong. Carmichael had already written, with Jim Rutberg, books on cycling and healthy eating, but only after meeting Tarbell, also a fitness enthusiast, did he find a partner who could help him create “Chris Carmichael’s Fitness Cookbook,” (Berkley Trade Paperback, $15). Carmichael offers a detailed plan for what to eat at various stages of athletic training, but recipes for such dishes as cumin-basted pork loin and sweet potato mash also appeal to the person whose most strenuous cycling in done in a spinning class at the gym, not the Tour de France.

PIMP MY BIKE

How do you make your cruiser bike stand out from all the other cushy rides? With bells, stickers, custom grips and tassels, of course. Among the ones that caught our eye were the Hawaiian floral grips, $12, and leather streamers, $12 from Electrabike, at REI. See more at electrabike.com.
