The United Services Automobile Association said Thursday that it would lower auto insurance premiums in the Denver-Boulder area by an average of 10 percent, beginning today.
There are more than 50,000 USAA customers in the Denver-Boulder area.
The decrease will vary by policyholder, with some Denver-Boulder customers seeing a decrease of up to 15 percent.
In Colorado Springs, the rates will decrease by an average of 9 percent, and up to 13 percent in some instances.
Current policyholders will see the change when their policies are renewed. New customers will be able to take advantage of the lower rates when they sign up.
In 2003, Colorado switched from a no-fault system to a tort system, where the at-fault driver is liable for accident damage.
USAA spokesman John Henry said that while part of the rate decrease stems from the state change, the primary reason for the move is because of better internal efficiencies.
“Our operating costs are more favorable today,” he said. “The company’s approach to be aggressive and competitive in terms of our rates means we were able to deliver a very healthy premium reduction for Colorado.”
