2 adults face charges after fight at youth baseball game

Brighton – One adult was taken to the hospital and two others are facing charges after a fight broke out at the state youth baseball championships Sunday, 9News reported.

Sgt. Paul Southard of Brighton police said two men face charges of disorderly conduct and assault.

The Colorado Hawks and the Green Mountain Rams were playing in the semifinal round for 8-year-olds at the Brighton Youth Sports Complex.

Southard told 9News it appeared that an argument broke out. A bystander tried to get in between the parents to break up the fight. When he did, he apparently was attacked by a parent and a Hawks coach, who face charges.

Rick Pawelcik’s son was playing for the Rams, who won the game.

Pawelcik told The Denver Post there was a rivalry between the two teams, and after the game the Rams parents were celebrating when some Hawks parents started making derogatory comments.

A 12-year-old girl threw something at a Rams mother, Pawelcik said, and the fight ensued. When a parent from another team stepped in, he was assaulted.

“It’s just bad sportsmanship,” Pawelcik said.

PICO ASILADO

Rescue teams search for fallen climber

Search-and-rescue teams from Saguache and Custer counties are looking for a climber who fell off a cliff in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Saguache County sheriff’s spokesman Mark Wertf said authorities received a 911 call at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The climber’s two companions put out a distress call on emergency radios, which was relayed to the sheriff’s department, Wertf said.

The relay call came from a man who overheard a call for help over his two-way radio, 20 miles away from the peak, Wertf said.

“Those radios are not supposed work that far away,” he said.

No contact has been made with the victim, who is thought to have fallen 100 feet.

Rescue workers could not climb to the peak in the evening because of lightning, Wertf said.

Seven search-and-rescue personnel are setting up a base camp near the 13,500-foot Pico Asilado. Search-and-rescue teams out of Gunnison and Aspen are en route to join the effort.

RIDGEWAY

250-acre blaze not safe for firefighters

Officials are keeping a close watch on an uncontained wildfire burning near Ridgeway.

Firefighters have not been put on the scene of the 250-acre blaze because of unsafe conditions, said Steve Ellis, fire management officer of the Montrose Interagency Fire Management Unit.

“Nobody is working on the scene now – it is unsafe due to the steep slopes,” said Ellis. “We do have monitors out watching the fire.”

No structures are threatened in the remote area roughly 8 miles northwest of Ridgeway.

Fire officials hope that improved weather may aid in containing the blaze.

“The weather is looking pretty good; the humidity is up,” said Larry Helmerick, fire information officer of the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center. “We are just holding our breath now.”

GRAND JUNCTION

Group to scale monolith to fly flag

Two dozen Grand Junction adventure-seekers are taking July 4 flag-flying to new heights.

A librarian, a construction worker, an attorney and an 18-year-old woman are among those who signed on with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Technical Rescue Team to scale a 450-foot sandstone monolith at the Colorado National Monument to plant a flag.

The tradition began nearly a century ago when John Ott climbed Independence Rock with Old Glory on July 4, 1910.

The tradition was picked up about 15 years ago by Grand Junction-area climbers.

This year, climbers with the technical rescue team and Colorado Alpine & Desert Adventures opened the opportunity to nonclimbers.
