A project of which designer Kristina Veio is justifiably proud is the Old World-style French bistro atmosphere that she created for Euro, one of Cherry Creek North’s hottest new restaurants. Friends of the Denver Public Library checked it out the other night when she and husband KC had a cocktail reception there to announce plans for the 2006 Booklovers’ Ball.

KC, an attorney and president of the Denver Library Commission, and Kristina are chairing the Oct. 14 fundraiser, and told supporters that the dinner-dance will have an “Alice in Wonderland” theme, with vignettes inspired by Alice, the White Rabbit and other characters from Lewis Carroll’s famed children’s novel.

The event will stick with the traditional no-speeches/no auction format that has endeared it to many. It will start with cocktails at 6 p.m. in the Denver Central Library and continue with a gourmet dinner, followed by dancing. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and his wife, Helen Thorpe, return as honorary co-chairs.

Among those attending the kickoff were library commissioners Lois-Ann Rivera and Kevin O’Connor; Joe Barrows; Allan Kline; Brent Kline; Geoff and Susan Barker; Michael Mills; Craig Andrisen; Don Greco and Carol Davis; Dave McIlveen; John Tobey; Jackie Morrison; Bradley Joseph; Dan Brown; Desiree Vallejo; Mike Keating and Devine Spindler; and Kristin Stork, representing the Denver Newspaper Agency. Tickets: Marthina Maduka at 720-865-2051.

What else is new?

Peru’s consul general in Denver, Maria Landaveri, is scheduled to attend Saturday’s benefit grand opening of the Peruvian restaurant Limon. Dinner seatings are at 5, 7 and 9 p.m. and tickets are $70, with proceeds going to Project C.U.R.E. An after-party, featuring the Latin band Quemondo, begins at 11 p.m. Tickets $15. In addition, on Tuesdays owner/chef Alex Gurevich will donate $1 from every sale of Limon’s house cocktail, the pisco sour, to Project C.U.R.E. in hopes of sending monthly palettes of medical supplies to Peru. Call 303-322-0898.

Denver Bronco Alfred Williams, former Denver Nugget Bill Hanzlik and Ricardo Patton, the University of Colorado men’s basketball coach, are scheduled to play in Monday’s Celebrity Golf Tournament benefiting the Porter-Billups Academy, a year-round program that helps give Denver’s inner-city youths the skills to combat peer pressure, stay in school and attend college.

Denverite Chauncey Billups, starting guard for the Detroit Pistons, signed on as a co-sponsor this year. The tournament, chaired by Mayor Hickenlooper, will be preceded by a reception and silent auction Sunday at the Pepsi Center’s Ridgeline Restaurant.
