The Denver area was spared another day of torrential rains, with only a few reports of minor flooding Wednesday.
Lakewood saw some street flooding, but the downpour that hit a day earlier and was predicted to hit again never materialized.
The same couldn’t be said for the parched counties of south- central Colorado.
Showers washed away parts of roads in Custer County and flooded parts of Fremont County, and Costilla County got a good soaking, too.
“Actually, we’re enjoying the rain,” said Costilla sheriff’s dispatcher Jacob Vigio. “I wish we would have more of it.”
As more than 4 inches of rain drenched parts of Fremont County, County Roads 115 and 50 were shut down, along with other roads, sheriff’s spokeswoman Samantha McCalla said. Authorities there helped some residents leave their homes but did not order any evacuations.
The flooding was the worst in the Florence and Penrose areas, she said.
“People need to stay out of the area if at all possible,” McCalla said.
During a break in the showers, Custer County sheriff’s dispatcher Vicki Smith said that only minor damage had been seen so far.
“Just little washouts,” she said. “We were getting lots and lots and lots of rain.”
