Q: Scott, I have been a RN in a surgical unit for the past three years. I love my job, however, I do not agree with how my supervisor runs our department. She tends to favor those employees that smoke and hang out at the bar with her after work. I do not dislike her, but I am afraid to talk to her about this. What should I do?

SCOTT: Don’t talk to her about it. In fact, don’t even bring it up. What you do on your own time is your business and the same goes for your supervisor. If she drinks and smokes, she’s going to gravitate towards others like her, naturally. Big deal.
If it bothers you that much you’re free to look for other employment but vocalizing your disapproval of her isn’t going to help your position at the hospital.
Sorry but she’s running the department, not you, and fighting her will only make things more difficult for you.
