Adults 25-44 years of age, 97 percent of men and 98 percent of women have had vaginal intercourse; 90 percent of men and 88 percent of women have had oral sex with an opposite-sex partner; and 40 percent of men and 35 percent of women have had anal sex with an opposite-sex partner. About 6.5 percent of men 25-44 years of have have had oral or anal sex with another man. 11 percent of women 25-44 years of age reported having a sexual experience with another woman.

At ages 15-17, about 13 percent of males and 11 percent of females had had heterosexual oral sex but not vaginal intercourse.

At ages 18-19, about 11 percent of males and 9 percent of females had had oral sex but not vaginal intercourse.

The proportion of males who have had oral sex with a female but not vaginal intercourse is 12 percent at 15-19, and drops to 3 percent at age 22-24, when most males have already had vaginal intercourse. Among females, the proportions were similar.

Among males 25-44 years of age, 97 percent have had sexual contact with an opposite-sex partner in their lives; 97 percent have had vaginal intercourse, 90 percent have had oral sex with a female, and 40 percent have had anal sex with a female. Among females, the proportions were similar.

Among males 15-44 years of age, 5.7 percent have had oral sex with another male at some time in their lives, and 3.7 percent have had anal sex with another male; overall, 6 percent have had oral or anal sex with another male.

Among women 15-44 years of age in 2002, 11 percent answered “yes” when asked: Have you ever had any sexual experience of any kind with another female?”

Males 30-44 years of age reported an average (median) of 6-8 female sexual partners in their lifetimes. Among women 30-44 years of age, the median number of male sexual partners in their lifetimes was about 4.

Among the 10 million Internet users who say they are currently single and looking for romantic partners, 74 percent say they have used the Internet in one way or another to further their romantic interests.

Some 15 percent of the people in the survey of the general public – representing about 30 million Americans – say they know someone who has been in a long-term relationship or married someone they met online. Twice as many know someone who has at least dabbled in the online dating scene.

31 percent of American adults – 63 million people – say they know someone who has used a dating website.

26 percent of American adults – 53 million people – say they know someone who has gone on a date with a person they met through a dating site.

15 percent of American adults – 30 million people – say they know someone who has been in a long-term relationship or married someone he or she met online.

At the moment, 7 percent of online adults, or about 10 million people, say they are currently seeking romantic partners. Within this group, 37 percent have gone to a dating website.

Eleven percent of all American Internet-using adults – about 16 million people – say they have gone to an online dating website or other site where they can meet people online.

43 percent of all online daters, or nearly 7 million adults, have gone on dates with people they met through the sites and 17 percent of them, nearly 3 million adults, have entered long-term relationships or married their online partners.
