An hour of precision percussion performance by around 80 of the region’s best and up-and-coming drummers at 4 p.m. Wednesday will shake you to the core. The free showcase winds up two days of solo and ensemble instruction under the baton of Drum Corps International legend Dennis DeLucia. The high school musicians have been putting the polish on cadences that will move high school marching bands across fields all over Colorado this fall.

GETTING THERE

BaseballfieldsofColorado.com

With the ball tournament season in full swing there’s hardly a parent in the state who hasn’t faced a kid’s summer play schedule and scratched their head: Loudy-Simpson Park, uh, huh? Baseballfieldsofcolorado.com removes some of the mystery, providing turn-by-turn directions and local maps to 1,000 fields of dreams around the state, including Loudy-Simpson in Craig. If baseball isn’t your family sport, webmaster Chuck Matthys is there to help in the fall too with his original online helper, soccerfieldsofcolorado.com.

970-879-5056

The annual Strings in the Mountains Music festival brings a classical edge to summer activities in the Steamboat Springs area. When the music isn’t a bargain, it’s actually free. The best example: The Thursday noon Music on the Green performance series in the city’s impressive garden. The picnic-friendly concerts feature high-quality sounds in a setting that’s welcoming to kids. The Amir String Quartet appears each week through Aug. 10.
