Grenadine: from the French grenade, or “pomegranate.” A deep red syrup traditionally made of pomegranate juice from the Carribbean island of Grenada. It gives red color and fruity sweetness to such cocktails as the Hurricane, Tequila Sunrise and Shirley Temple. Grenadine these days often contains other fruit juices, and some brands simply add red food coloring to corn syrup, so read the label or make your own by heating 2 cups pomegrante juice and 2 cups granulated sugar in a pan over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, stir in 1 ounce vodka (as a preservative), pour into a clean bottle and store in refrigerator. | Source: drinksmixer.com, recipe from kaiser penguin.com|Kristen Browning-Blas
