Title: Real

Sponsor: Ed Perlmutter for Congress

The message: Peggy Lamm supported legislation that allowed people to take concealed weapons into schools and allowed people to buy and sell armor-piercing bullets. She also supported Republican Gov. Bill Owens.

Fact: While a member of the Colorado statehouse, Lamm voted for legislation in 1995 and 1996 that would have overhauled the system for issuing concealed-weapons permits and required background checks. The 1996 legislation would have repealed a section of state law barring concealed weapons from schools. Neither bill was signed into law. As a member of the House judiciary committee in 1995, Lamm voted against legislation that would have outlawed the selling and owning of armor-piercing ammunition. The legislation did not make it out of committee. Federal law already made that ammunition illegal.

Lamm’s name was included on a list of Democrats that Owens’ campaign said supported his re-election in 2002. Lamm denies giving Owens permission to use her name and said that she voted for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rollie Heath. But a weekly, The Colorado Statesman, quoted her in 2002 as supporting Owens and stating: “Rollie Heath is wonderful, but he doesn’t have much of a shot.”

Sean Tonner, the 2002 campaign manager for Owens, said Lamm gave permission for Owens to use her name as a supporter.
