Tommyknocker Mining Days Festival
7 a.m.-5 p.m., Idaho Springs. Free. clearcreekcounty.org or 303-567-4660
The funky town of Idaho Springs pays homage today to its mining heritage and the mythical sprites that made mischief in gold mines in the area. Fuel yourself for a day of fun at a pancake breakfast at the Idaho Springs Fire Department building on Colorado Boulevard at 7 a.m., then head on over to the drilling and mucking competition at 9 a.m. Tommyknocker’s Gold Rush Parade heads down Miner Street around 12:30 p.m., and there’s a pack burro race at 1 p.m. In between the Sunday-only events, you can run a fireman’s obstacle course, try Cornish pasties, learn to make candles and soap, and try your luck at gold panning.
