STRIPPED-DOWN RIDE

Rolling Reminder

On the Denver streets through September

No, that blaze-orange ’92 Crown Victoria rolling around the city looking for all the world like someone stole the doors, hood, trunk lid, interior upholstery, back and passenger seats is not the aftermath of a chop-shop crime. It’s a slightly cryptic reminder from Denver Water – part of the “Use only what you need” campaign – that the bare minimum is usually enough to get the job done. Amazingly, the Rolling Reminder still has air conditioning, though driver Andy Dutlinger admits, “It’s a little wierd to be running the AC and having hot air pouring in through all of the holes in the floor.”

GO NUTS

High Country Almonds

Heritage Square

Stirring up huge batches of crispy candied almonds is a Risner family affair. Jerry Risner and his son Ray share the duties in a Heritage Square storefront. But semi-responsible sweet tooths can buy quarter-, half- and 1-pound cones at Edwards Meats in Wheat Ridge and starting Thursday in booth A-39 under the grandstands at Cheyenne Frontier Days. We hoovered up a package of the cinnamon-spiced version in nothing flat. The next snack in our sights? Risners’ newest product, salty-sweet Sagebrush Peanuts.
