Five geldings and two fillies will race in this afternoon’s $25,000 Colorado Derby at Arapahoe Park, including Sunday Romeo, who won the Inaugural Stakes on June 10, the opening day of the 39-day meet at the Aurora track.
Sunday Romeo, the 5-2 morning-line favorite, will carry high weight of 124 pounds in the mile-and-a-sixteenth test for 3-year-olds with Jose Torres to ride.
Among the top challengers to Sunday Romeo is Skip’s Bet, who has posted three wins in four starts at Arapahoe Park, including the $25,000-added Ruffian Stakes on July 9.
Boulder biker earns berth in Worlds
Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski of Boulder will represent the United States at the Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships Aug. 22-27 in New Zealand, USA Cycling announced last week. He earned an automatic nomination to the team with a fifth-place finish in an event in Scotland this year.
Also earning automatic berths were: Todd Wells of Durango, on the elite men’s cross country team; Shonny Vanlandingham of Durango and Heather Irmiger of Boulder on the elite women’s cross country team; and Jessica Vogt of Boulder, on the women’s 4-cross squad.
