Easy Street Wheat, $7.49 a six-pack

Wheat beers have never held a big attraction for me, but friends who love ’em, really love ’em.

One of the best American-style wheat beers is made in Colorado by Odell Brewing Co. in Fort Collins. Easy Street Wheat, an unfiltered version, won a gold medal at the 2005 Great American Beer Festival.

Wheat beers are best for summertime drinking. They are light and, if done right, rest easy on the tongue. Like most American versions of this old German style, there are no overpowering notes of banana and clove in Easy Street Wheat.

The brewers at Odell encourage drinkers not to be put off by the yeast residue in the bottle. “Just pour two-thirds of the beer into a glass, swirl what’s left to stir up the yeast, then pour the rest and enjoy.”
