Title: Take On

Sponsor: Peggy Lamm for Congress

The message: Peggy Lamm is a fighter who will take on the special interests. She investigated the University of Colorado athletic recruiting scandal and also pushed for passage of Colorado’s do-not-call list.

One of her opponents in the Democratic primary, Ed Perlmutter, is in the pocket of big developers, Wal-Mart and the energy industry.

Fact: Lamm in 2004 was appointed co-chair of the commission to investigate the University of Colorado athletic recruiting scandal. As a lobbyist for the Bighorn Center for Public Policy, Lamm pushed for the do-not-call bill that placed new restrictions on telemarketers.

Perlmutter’s law firm does represent developers.

His second cousin, Jordon Perlmutter, owns a company that developed a Wal-Mart in Westminster. He has given the candidate $4,200, but there is no evidence Ed Perlmutter had any involvement in the Wal-Mart development.

Perlmutter has received more than $11,800 in contributions from energy interests, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. As a state senator in 2002, he sponsored legislation favored by the energy industry. Senate Bill 141 would have allowed companies that retrieve gas and oil from land owned by others to charge them for production costs. More recently, Howard Boigon, an attorney at Hogan & Hartson who represents oil and gas interests, sent an e-mail urging members of the Colorado Oil and Gas Association to attend a Perlmutter fundraiser on May 1.
