The University of Minnesota announced Tuesday the hiring of Denver men’s tennis coach Geoff Young as the Golden Gophers’ new coach.
Young led the Pioneers to a 71-68 record in six seasons, including a No. 66 final national ranking, a first for the Pioneers, which moved to the Division I ranks in 1998.
Wyoming prep coach faces assault charges
Lingle-Fort Laramie girls basketball coach Buddy Patterson has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor.
Patterson, 45, posted $10,000 bond and was released from jail in Platte County on Friday.
Patterson, who led the team to its first state championship last season, is charged with four counts of second- degree sexual assault for incidents alleged to have occurred between June 20, 2002, and March 31, 2003.
High school champion qualifies for Amateur
Steve Ziegler of Legacy High School, the defending Class 5A state champion, shot a 6-under-par 66 in the afternoon round to claim medalist honors and qualify for the U.S. Amateur in sectional qualifying at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora on Tuesday.
Ziegler’s 8-under 136 bested the other qualifiers, Tom Glissmeyer of Colorado Springs, who plays for Southern California, and Ty Capps of Highlands Ranch and Nebraska, by one stroke. The U.S. Amateur will be held at Hazeltine National G.C. outside Minneapolis starting Aug. 22.
