Who: James and Giovanna Albersheim of Arvada
Where: Fly fishing on the Lochy River near Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown. This river is across the lake from the only road, so access is by boat or helicopter.
Best meal: We also stayed at Lake Brunner Lodge, another hot spot for fly fishing in the Westland region. It was here that we discovered the lodge’s best-kept secret, a local chef named Scotty Robinson, who prepared local specialties. Our favorite included an appetizer of fresh scallops followed by pistachio crusted rack of lamb, finished off with Pavlova, a New Zealand favorite.
Best deal: Considering Scotty and the great fishing, Lake Brunner Lodge is the best deal. The price, including a large, lake- view room, gourmet breakfast and three-course dinner for two, is about $240 per night. Best time to go: January or February for the best fishing. These are their summer months, so highs average 75-80. Wildlife viewing, including sperm whales and penguins, is also good during these months.
Best travel tips: We advise using a travel agent in New Zealand who can help design your vacation to suit your travel tastes. We used Colin McAnnalley, a vacation designer from New Zealand Encounters.
