Three-time major tournament winner Phil Mickelson confirmed Thursday he will play in The International, which begins Aug. 10 at Castle Pines Golf Club. Mickelson won the event in 1993 and 1997.

“Obviously, we’re thrilled to announce Phil’s participation in our event,” executive director Larry Thiel said in a release. “He is a favorite of golf fans everywhere and is certainly a favorite of ours. Perhaps this will be the year that he wins his third trophy here.”

Mickelson has won twice on the Tour this year (BellSouth Classic and The Masters) and has earned $4,123,005, placing him third on the money list.

DU tennis coach follows husband to Minn.

The University of Denver lost both of its tennis coaches this week. Women’s coach Dana Young announced Thursday she is resigning. Her husband, Mark, resigned Tuesday to become the men’s coach at Minnesota.

Dana was twice named Sun Belt Conference coach of the year. She led the Pioneers to a 78-45 mark in six seasons and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004.

“I want to thank the current DU student-athletes, alumni, Pioneer athletic department and Denver community for making my six years as head coach so wonderful,” Young said. “While it is difficult to leave such an amazing environment like DU, I am looking forward to spending more time with my children, Gavin and Karin, as well as return home to Minnesota to be closer to family.”

The Youngs guided the Pioneers’ tennis programs since they made the move to Division I in 1998.
