Gonzo Imperial Porter, $6.99 a four-pack

Aug. 20 marks the first anniversary of the memorial ceremony that launched, if not his career, the ashes of Aspen author Hunter S. Thompson.

To mark the occasion, Denver’s Flying Dog Brewery is rereleasing Gonzo Imperial Porter, a hearty, high-alcohol brew it created to honor the writer whose ashes were blasted out of a cannon at his Woody Creek home.

The dark beer is heavily malted with an alcohol content of 9.5 percent (by volume), just the way he liked it.

Gonzo Imperial Porter is part of Flying Dog’s year-round litter of beers but is produced only in 50-barrel batches, so it’s frequently not in retail outlets. Proceeds go to building a permanent memorial to Thompson, who killed himself Feb. 20, 2005. Flying Dog’s beers are available in 45 states.
