MADAWASKA, Maine-

A granite monument has been delivered declaring Madawaska to be the northeastern corner of the United States.

The 8-foot-high monument is part of a continuing initiative by a group of residents to create a Four Corners Monument Park.

The effort is being led by Joe Lachance, who is part of a committee working to create an $80,000 park that will include the granite monument denoting Madawaska's place in the U.S., according to the Bangor Daily News.

Lachance and his wife circled the United States aboard their Harley-Davidson motorcycles six years ago, stopping at the four corners of the country in the Southern California Motorcycle Club Four Corners ride.

The Four Corners Tour of the SCMA, now in its 24th year, includes stops at the nation's four corners at San Ysidro, Calif.; Blaine, Wash.; Key West, Fla.; and Madawaska.

Riders are expected to complete the loop within 21 days and have to get a gasoline receipt and a photo with a predetermined landmark at each spot. The average rider puts in nearly 10,000 miles to complete the circuit.

The granite monument states that Madawaska was founded by the Acadians in 1869 and is the most northeastern town in the U.S.

The park Lachance hopes to see built would include a 14-foot-high water fountain, benches, a lawn and a walkway surfaced with pavers. The group is raising money through the sale of pavers at $100 each, raffles, grants and a motorcycle giveaway.

The Four Corners Tour and the effort to build the park is unrelated to Four Corners National Monument, a national park in the Southwest where the borders of Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona meet.
