Horsetooth still fishing
Although a precipitous drop in water level at Horsetooth Reservoir has left moored boats high and dry at the marina, the impoundment west of Fort Collins remains open for boating and fishing. When the reservoir was drained two years ago for dam repair, boat ramps were extended all the way down to dead pool. Any craft can be launched at any of the ramps and the reservoir still contains 1,500 surface acres of water. Ken Kehmeier, biologist with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, reports that the good early bite for walleye and smallmouth has been diminished by a loss of 9 to 10 vertical feet of water over the past three weeks. “Walleye have moved off the shore and the smallmouth bite has declined,” he said.
