Mullen’s Phil Morelli, who will enter this week’s opening practice for the 2006 season as perhaps Colorado’s top returning running back, has orally committed to play for Colorado State.

According to his father, Troy, an assistant coach with the Mustangs, the younger Morelli, 5-feet-11, 185 pounds, recently made his intentions known to the CSU staff.

Morelli, who also visited Cal-Berkeley and Stanford, is versatile – he surpassed 1,100 yards rushing and had 30 catches in 2005, including scoring seven touchdowns and rushing for 257 yards in the Class 5A semifinals against Arvada West. The Mustangs finished runners-up to Douglas County.

With a 3.5 grade-point average, the elder Morelli said his son will enter CSU with an undeclared major.
